Most people can’t say what they would be doing as an occupation when they were 4 or 5 or even 15, but I am not most people. I don’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a writer. And although a number of people attempted to talk me out of pursuing writing as a career for a more traditional route, I was unwavering in saying that one way or another I would be a writer.

I am a freelance writer, whose work has appeared in a variety of publications including the New York Times, Boston.com and the New Haven Register. In November 2005, I combined my writing career with my food obsession, creating a food blog, Cucina Bella. These days, my writing operates between two worlds: hard news reporting and foodisms. It’s a great place to be.

I also edit Well Fed On The Town’s sister site, Fit Fare.

Shelly Butcher

Shelly is a technical writer by day and a foodblogger by night. Currently residing in Oakland, California, Shelly previously lived in Israel for twelve years, where she ate Israeli, Lebanese, Iraqi, Uzbeki, Persian, Morroccan, Yemeni, Turkish, Romanian, Greek, and Egyptian food. She also ate Chinese food, but there’s only one decent Chinese restaurant in Israel. Shelly is primarily interested in traditional and home-cooked foods of all cultures, and enjoys exploring the fundamental interconnectedness of all things food. For example, she finds it amusing that the wonton, also known as mantu or kreple, can be found in almost every culture. Shelly feels very silly writing bios about herself in the third person as she never knows quite what to say. Shelly’s other food ramblings can be found at An Open Cupboard.

Greg Bullard

Greg Bullard’s love for food began in his Father’s kitchen and grew from there to be a cornerstone of his life. Though he calls Omaha, NE home currently, Greg has driven in all 48 contiguous states, Canada and Mexico, and has been sure to stop for a bite to eat in each of those. A Native Texan, his culinary beginnings were founded with Barbecue (Texas Style!), Tex-Mex and Southern comfort foods but quickly developed into an appreciation for every culture’s take on the best things to eat. A firm believer in the concept that you live to eat, not eat to live, Greg’s other edible musings can be found at www.whatgregeats.com.

Kelly Mahoney

I’m a graduate student at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. I spend my days writing about youth, politics and the 2008 election for the Medill News Service in Washington, D.C., and my evenings cooking in my stove-less kitchen and updating my food Web site, Kelly the Culinarian. I’ve also been a business writer in Arizona, a science and medical writer in Chicago, a court and features writer in on the North Side of Chicago and a general assignment reporter in Peoria, Ill., while I was working on my undergrad at Bradley University. I’ve traveled and lived abroad, so I use every food experience as a cultural adventure. After I finish my Master’s of Journalism in December, I’m moving back to the Chicagoland area to find a job writing at a newspaper.

My favorite foods are sushi and chocolate, though not together, and my favorite drink of the moment is Blue Moon. While I’m trying to develop a sophisticated palate, you’ll find that my Web site has an eclectic blend of fast-food reviews, home-made favorites and dining-out discoveries.

Curt McAdams

I write my own blog about food, with an emphasis on barbecue, at Bucky’s Barbecue Blog. When I was 11, my family took an extended trip to Europe; I found out that, when you can’t read a menu, you have to try new things. I also found out that I LIKED trying new things! Since then, I’ve been up for new restaurants, whether 4 star or screen-door dives. I’m from the Midwest, so you won’t hear about the newest pretentious Soho restaurant from me!

I began cooking out of pure desperation. I simply could not eat fast food any more. Plus, I was getting married and cooking seemed like something a grown up should know how to do. The first recipe I ever tried that didn’t involve microwaving for five minutes on high or opening Styrofoam boxes was by Rachael Ray. I have been cooking her recipes ever since, as my personal blog Everything Rachael Ray evidences.

Cate O’Malley

For as long as I can remember, I have loved writing and yearned to be a freelance journalist when I grew up. When I moved out on my own for the first time, I discovered a second passion … cooking. Now, many years later, I still have a love for both and started my site, Sweetnicks, in an effort to combine them. I have a slight, ahem, obsession with cookbooks, food/cooking magazines, and, well, anything related to food. Joining the food blogging community, it’s great to be among others who get the obsession. My site’s name comes from my 5-year-old son, Nicholas, who loves to help me in the kitchen almost as much as he loves Dora, Spiderman and his girlfriend.
