Mexican Food in the Midwest: Julio’s - Omaha, NE

I’ll come out and say it. I am a Mexican Food Snob. Having been born and raised in Texas, I would definitely consider myself a connoisseur of interior Mexican cuisine, Tex-Mex and Mexican-American fare. With that said, Julio’s in Omaha, NE did not disappoint.
Julio’s bills itself as Omaha’s premier Tex-Mex. That having been said, while […]

Perfect French Onion Soup: French Cafe, Omaha

Proper French Onion Soup should be served in a small crockery style bowl. It should be covered with a stringy, relatively unsalted, melty cheese (Fontina or Gruyere) baked on top. Below the cheese should be a round crouton of bread floating on the soup, soaking in the broth from below and adhering to the cheese […]

Little of This, Little of That: Nobu, Honolulu

This, the second opportunity I had to dine at one of the twenty-two global Nobu locations, was every bit as memorable as the first. An opportunity to enjoy a meal at Nobu Waikiki provided all of the inspiration necessary to arrange a day trip to Oahu, while vacationing on Kauai in Hawaii.
During a trip to […]

Spezia: Dining Off the Menu in Omaha

Last week I had the pleasure of dining at Spezia, in Omaha, NE. Now, I have written about Spezia before, so I won’t cover that ground again. Suffice it to say, I had an enjoyable business dinner with great food and company.
However, while I was looking over my available choices from the menu, I kept […]

The Med Comes to Hawaii: Mediterranean Gourmet

Located a few miles from where the road ends, just 10 minutes west of the small village of Hanalei, on the North Shore of the most remote Hawaiian Island, Kauai, I will admit that you would have to go a bit out of your way just to dine at Mediterranean Gourmet. However, if you happen […]

Authentic Chinese at Chiang’s Gourmet in Seattle, WA

Now just wait a minute! How do you define “Authentic Chinese?”
Well, in this case, it was simple. They handed us two menus when we sat for Dinner, the “American Menu” and the “Chinese Menu.” A little background is in order though.
Seattle was just a day stop for us as we began our vacation. We hopped […]

Breakfast with a View: Cafe Hanalei

So, here I am in paradise. No really, here I am. This, the second full day of my vacation on the gorgeous island of Kauai, in Hawaii, started off with a great breakfast. The stunning Princeville Resort in Hanalei, HI provided the setting for this amazing breakfast.
A stroll through fountains, across flagstones, over marble tiled […]

Nicola’s Italian Restaurant: Omaha, NE

Nicola’s Italian Restaurant, or Nicola’s in the Market as it is listed in some places, is a nice little Italian food restaurant in the Omaha Old Market district. (By the way, that’s nih-KOHL-uhs).
The menu is smaller than the wine list (which is one of my basic measurements for how good a wine list is, so […]

Sushi in the Heartland: Sakura Bana - Omaha, NE

I would like to give thanks for advanced refrigeration methodologies and rapid, global shipping. Because of these two items I am able to enjoy outstanding Sushi in America’s Heartland. In this case, Sakura Bana in Omaha, NE.
When you think Omaha, you think probably think of insurance (Mutual of Omaha, anyone?), corn, beef, the College World […]

A Whole New Way to Dine Out: Whole Foods Market

When is the last time your significant other turned to you and said, “Let’s go out to the grocery store and eat dinner.” The truth is, it might not be that uncommon any longer. More and more of your upscale grocery store chains are adding a salad bar or other buffet style offerings with a […]

Greg Bullard

Greg Bullard's love for food began in his Father's kitchen and grew from there to be a cornerstone of his life. Though he calls Omaha, NE home currently, Greg has driven in all 48 contiguous states, Canada and Mexico, and has been sure to stop for a bite to eat in each of those. A Native Texan, his culinary beginnings were founded with Barbecue (Texas Style!), Tex-Mex and Southern comfort foods but quickly developed into an appreciation for every culture's take on the best things to eat. A firm believer in the concept that you live to eat, not eat to live, Greg's other edible musings can be found at www.whatgregeats.com.
