Snuggie Pub Crawl coming to Chicago
The Chicago Tribune recently announced that a “Snuggie™” Pub Crawl is being planned for Chicago. While not organized by the Tribune, their announcement has generated a lot of buzz for the event. Dan Kuthy and David Barnes are the ones who came up with the idea and will be acting as hosts for the event. They have launched the website Snuggiepubcrawl.com for interested people to order their Snuggie™ and sign up for the event which is scheduled on April 18, 2009. The list of bars included in the pub crawl is not set yet, but as of this writing over 1400 people are already signed up!
So what is a “Snuggie™” Pub Crawl? Participants will wear a “as seen on tv” Snuggie™ (a blanket with sleeves) while going to the various bars on the pub crawl route. I think there is quite a bit of hype around this event because people find it very amusing. Most Chicagoans have a good sense of humor and this time of year we like something to amuse us while we get through the last few cold winter months. The image of 1000 people together bundled up in their Snuggie™ walking around, wandering in and out of bars, is truly an amusing one.
Pub crawls are very popular events in Chicago, usually organized by a local organization as a fund-raiser or marketing activity. There are also “official” pub crawls for both tourists and locals who would like to visit several Chicago bars in one evening. The Chicago History Museum often organizes history pub crawls. There are all sorts of themed or costume pub crawls throughout the year, especially around Halloween. During the month of December you often see pub crawl participants donning Santa hats. They are fun events because you usually go with a few friends and merge into a larger group which can be between of 30-300 people. Through out the night you visit a series of bars at your own pace and you will usually see other people from your group making it easy to strike up conversation with new people.
In my personal opinion, the Snuggie™ Pub Crawl will be a bit on the wild side just because of the amount of people and the spirit of silliness in the event. But if you are up for a party, it will probably be a very fun night.
