Four Ways to Eat Out With Less Impact

The joys of eating out don’t have to be abandoned for the sake of the environment! Just make a few select changes and you can have a great meal without giving Mother Nature a headache.

  1. Choose a local restaurant. Supporting local businesses helps grow the local economy, which helps everyone.
  2. Look for sustainable restaurants. Some restaurants strive to use primary fresh, local ingredients. Read Well Fed On The Town for information on sustainable restaurants, which we will be highlighting over the next few weeks.
  3. Don’t toss your leftovers! They can make a good meal for another day. It’s better than creating waste and not using everything.
  4. Bring your own takeout containers. It may sound weird, but it will save countless Styrofoam trays that would otherwise find their way into landfills.

Cool — I’d never though of bringing my own tupperware, but it makes sense.

Another “green” thing you can do with your doggie bag is to “replate” it, meaning to leave it somewhere were a hungry homeless person can easily pick it up and eat it:

I can’t remember where I learned of this site, but we replated our lunch leftovers from Guero’s in Austin yesterday. We were only a block from the restaurant when we found someone who needed them.
