Fall Harvest in Asheville

Fall at the Orchard at AltapassThere are two things that I love with a passion: the fall season and great food. The fact that Asheville does both in such an impressive manner is a big reason why I moved here. I am oh-so excited to see the first hints of fall color here, and I’m equally thrilled there are so many fall harvest adventures ideal for a foodie like me.

I’ve lived plenty of places where the best you find of the fall harvest is perhaps a lame cornucopia at a local craft store, or pumpkins and gourds at the chain grocery store. Here, you can hit one of 40-some farmer’s markets and tailgate markets to buy harvest produce direct from the farmer.

You can hit a nearby farm or orchard, such as the Orchard at Altapass for fresh apples and autumn flavors of fudge like apple, pumpkin and maple. Hickory Nut Gap Farm allows visitors to pick their own pumpkins, visit the apple stand, or wind through their corn maze.

Get into the wine grape harvest up close and personal by stomping grapes at Biltmore Winery, America’s most visited winery. They also have daily culinary demonstrations, behind-the-scenes winery tours, red wine and chocolate pairing workshops and barrel tastings.

You can also get a real food-lover’s taste of the best of the harvest by visiting one of the Asheville area restaurants using locally-grown produce, many of which change their menu seasonally.

I just can’t wait to taste fall. Delicious!
