Dining Well While on the Road
One of the things I look forward to when going on vacation is the food. It’s a perfect chance to experience new restaurants, new cuisines, and heck, have someone else do the dishes and clean-up!
The current issue of Shape magazine had a few great websites that make ideal resources for the next time you’re heading to a new city and want to track down the best food and eating establishments you can while on the road.
- Connect with fellow food lovers. Going to Philly and want to know where to get the best cheesesteak? Post your query on chowhound.com and other members will respond with recommendations. Use it for American cities and far-flung locales alike.
- Get your meat-free fix. Happychow.net has more than 5,000 listings for vegetarian eateries around the world from Venezuela to Vietnam. You’ll get addresses, phone numbers and price ranges.
- Catch up on foodie gossip. If you’re going to New York or Los Angeles, see what new bistro everyone is buzzing about at eater.com. The site’s founders pride themselves on being the first ones to report on restaurant openings and chefs’ comings and goings.
- Make ordering easier. Menupages.com has menus that span more than 28 types of cuisine in seven US cities. After you register for a free account, you can create a personal folder to save menus in.

A slight correction on the “Get your meat-free fix” item. The website is happycow.net, not what is listed.
I have used happycow to plan for my infrequent trips to Asia with great success.
