Well Fed On the Town

I am so, so sorry. My apologies to all the readers who cannot order Claire’s flapjacks on the web. Sadly, these wonders are too delicate for long distance travel. Those readers outside the San Francisco Bay Area can console yourselves with a pack of Clairesquares–buttery shortbread cookies covered in caramel and chocolate.

Those of you who are local to the San Francisco Bay Area may be wondering what on earth Claire’s Flapjacks are and why you should buy them. Flapjacks are a type of cookie composed of crunchy oats enveloped by a thin layer of buttery brown sugar caramel and dipped in milk or dark chocolate on one end. The oat cookie is delightfully lacy and crisp, and the caramel is so light that it literally melts in your mouth. I always try to save half a flapjack for later, but each bite leaves a lingering taste of fresh butter that entices. I wind up eating the whole thing, down to the bittersweet chocolate end.

The maker of Flapjacks is none other than Claire herself, a local baker who sells her goods through La Cocina Community Kitchen. From their website:

La Cocina Community Kitchen [is] a nonprofit shared use commercial kitchen and business incubator. La Cocina was founded to serve as a platform for low-income entrepreneurs launching or expanding their food businesses. La Cocina assists low-income food entrepreneurs by providing access to a fully approved and equipped commercial kitchen and to the training and technical assistance they need.

You can find Claire’s flapjacks and squares at the La Cocina stall on Saturdays at the Ferry Plaza and Alemany farmers markets. Free samples are available. Definitely try the chocolate covered flapjack bites–like the chocolate-covered end of a flapjack in miniature.
