Deconstructing the Market - The Bakery
To continue with looking at a local market that’s known for the quality of its offerings as well as its service, I’m looking at the individual departments and pointing out what’s done well, from a consumer’s perspective.
The first department in the newest Dorothy Lane Market (dlm), in Springboro, Ohio, is the bakery. One item for which dlm has long been known is what they call “Killer Brownies”. There are several versions of them, but the original is a brownie about an inch thick. It’s got some sort of caramel in between layers of very good brownie with nuts. They are truly killer both in taste and in what eating too many will do to you!
For some time, dlm has also offered top quality pastries made on site that would compete with most stand-alone bakeries. They also now offer very good quality artisanal breads, with a daily schedule showing which breads are available on which days. They even allow home bakers to purchase their flour, which they order in large quantities.
On top of the quality of the baked goods, dlm staff is very knowledgeable about what they’re doing, and more than very friendly. It’s one of the only markets in which I’ve shopped where the employees actually seem to like being there. That kind of attitude helps contribute to the shopping experience, too.
When I want baked goods that I don’t know how to make myself or don’t have time to make myself, this is where I go. The quality is just hard to match.
