Poor Herbie’s in Madison, NJ

Remember the old show, Cheers?  The mailman would walk in, and everyone would look up from their beer and shout “Norm!”  Cheers - the place where everyone knows your name.  Poor Herbie’s in Madison, NJ is a bit like that.  A small, dimly lit place, it’s located right dab in the center of a very quaint downtown area.  Frequented by the locals and outsiders alike, it’s a great place for a semi-fancy meal with a reasonable price tag.  In business since 1980, the actual location has quite a history, having once been a tailor’s shop and a grocery store at varying times.

The burgers are big, thick and juicy, just like their french fries.  The steaks are much of the same.  We used to live in the area, and one of the things that kept me coming back to Poor Herbie’s again and again was their bleu cheese dressing.  So good they actually charge extra for it (I hate when restaurants do that).  The service is perfectly paced … slow, but not slow enough that you’re looking to hunt down your waitress, and fast, but not fast enough that you feel rushed.

Madison was nicknamed The Rose City long ago for the rash of rose growers in the area.  It’s a perfect spot to spend a lazy Saturday.  Grab a matinee at the local theater, walk over to Poor Herbie’s for a bite to eat and cap off the evening with an ice cream cone from Baskin Robbins and a slow walk down Main Street.
